Ohio State Buckeyes game used Gladiator All American model helmet from the 1992-93 seasons. Ohio State was one of the major schools that preferred to use Gladiator Hydra Flo GUU helmets in the mid to late 1970s, and continued to purchase and use the XL Gladiators into the 1980s and early 1990s.
This helmet is complete with the exception of the interior fluid liner, kept by the team as a spare for other helmets as the Gladiator line had been purchased by Riddell. The helmet has its original paint, original striping, original Riddell chinstrap and original Riddell front bumper. The original Riddell NJOP-DW-XL is secured to the helmet with original Riddell conventional clips at the top mount and double Riddell clips at the side mounts of the helmet. The helmet has heavy wear on the exterior, with deep gouges to the front and missing paint below each earhole. The helmet has its original thick foam Riddell jaw pads as used during this era by college and NFL teams.
Stokes player identifier is applied to the rear - right side of the helmet and is adhered well. There is also a #44 hand written inside of the helmet near the reconditioning stickers. Additionally, there is handwriting on the bladder liner pad of Stokes name, "FR" and Middle Linebacker. It is not known who wrote on the bladder pad - Stokes, or the equipment staff when they allowed him to keep his helmet. The helmet has the original center multi-stripe as used by the Buckeyes during this period. The stripe is original, properly positioned, and adhered to the helmet very well with no lifting. Finally, there are original buckeye award decals, awarded to Stokes, on the left side of the helmet.
A great helmet - of a very desirable team. If you collect Ohio State helmets, you know how rare they are - and the fact that they normally never are offered with the player identifiers, along with the fact that the buckeye decals are almost always removed from the helmet. This one has both.
A rare team, a rare helmet model, and a rare helmet that is attributed to an actual player in the condition as it was when it was last used on the field. Awesome.
