Game Used Texas Longhorns Riddell SC1 model helmet. The SC1 was an experimental helmet developed by Riddell in the early 1990's. It had an internal finger air pump in which the player could inflate his own padding cells. The pump would leak as would the bladder pad liners where the pump tube was inserted on side of the padding as well as the other side where the release valve was located. A Google search on this model of helmet will show very little - except a question on our own website - Football Helmet Collectors. A member acquired a New York Giants helmet in this rare model and had never seen one before. No other members had any information or were familiar with the SC1. Interesting to not that one of the members - a longtime Riddell sales rep requested photos of the helmet, as he had never seen one before.
This helmet marks the third of this model that we have seen. The Giants mentioned above and a Lions that sold a couple years back on eBay. The helmet is original as sourced. The medium shell is molded white as the ‘Horns wore in the 1990s. The helmet has the original logos on the sides as well as the number 39 on the rear. Both the logos and the numbers have curled a bit on the edges over the years. The helmet retains its original Schutt NJOP model facemask, secured to the helmet with the original clips and hardware. The mask has a datecode of 1992. A great Longhorn helmet - with a story to tell. A tough helmet model to find.
