Arizona Cardinals Game Worn/Team Issued helmet from the 1992 season. We believe the helmet to be team issued or a camp/preseason helmet as there is very little wear on the exterior. The Riddell WD1 model helmet is all original in a very large XL size of 8 1/4. This helmet was new in 1992 but has spent most of it's life sitting on a shelf in the Cardinals equipment room - waiting for a player with a very large head. The helmet was reconditioned as least once as the helmet was repainted to the Cardinals metallic white paint and had the American Flag applied to the rear as worn in 2001 and beyond.
The Riddell WD1 model helmet is all original in a very large XXL size of 8 1/4. The helmet has a team applied #41 player identifier on the rear - issued to a player, but it is unclear for what season the helmet was issued to #41, as the equipment staff notes on the tape inside of the helmet does not mention the #41 - at least for the 1992 season indicated on the athletic tape. Sourced straight from the Cardinals through their reconditioner, the helmet has outstanding provinance.
The helmet is original as sourced, unaltered since released, and matches examples of Cardinals game used helmets. The helmet is complete with all interior WD1 padding as well as the original chinstrap. It has the original Cardinals decals on the sides, properly positioned on the helmet and adhered to the helmet very well with no lifting. Interesting to note that although very similar and almost not noticeable, the helmet has two different Cardinals logo decals - one older slightly lighter red along with the slightly darker red logo used by the team prior to the change to the Cardinals head shape in 2005 - another sign that the XXL helmet had been reconditioned later in it's life before finally being taken out of service. It was sent back to the reconditioner where it was taken out of service and placed on a shelf until our purchase.
The helmet has all game decals used by the team, including the NFL Shield, American Flag, team applied warning label, and CARDINALS rear bumper. The helmet has Schutt NJOP-XL model facemask, secured to the helmet with Schutt conventional clips at the top and Riddell clips at the side mounts. The Cardinals and several other NFL teams used Riddell clips at the sides, even when using Schutt masks, as the Riddell clips had two holes allowing the mask to be mounted closer to, or further from the players face. Both the chinstrap and front bumper have the black ink as used by Riddell during the very early 1990s.
The helmet has very light wear to the outside and inside, and is in perfect display condition. The helmet has the athletic tape that the Cardinals equipment staff and reconditioner has used for years, with the year/model/size of the helmet and typically the facemask model. The helmet's interior tape does not list a facemask model indicating that the helmet did not have a player specified model for the 1992 season. Where have you ever seen or where are you going to find a helmet this large that will fit your head? It does not get any better!
