Detroit Lions game used helmet from the 1991-93 seasons. The helmet has a #24 player identifiers on the inside of the helmet, with the exterior player identifiers removed by the team. Mel Jenkins wore #24 for the Lions and was a 16 game starter for the ‘91 and ‘92 seasons. The Riddell VSR1 model helmet is all original and complete, with the exception of the chinstrap - most likely kept by Jenkins or the team.
The helmet has its original striping and logos on the sides, properly positioned and adhered well with no lifting. Other decals include the team white on clear oversized warning label, the NFL shield, and the Lions rear bumper decal covering the Riddell name. The helmet has moderate to heavy wear with gouges, scrapes, and scuffs on the entire helmet along with the moderate wear and field dirt on the helmet’s inside. There is damaged paint on the rear right side - what appears to be melted paint, most likely from holding the helmet too close to a sideline heater during a winter away game. the last two games of the ‘91 season were held in Buffalo and Green Bay with a game time temperature of -6 degrees with the windchill.
The facemask is a Schutt ROPO-UB-DW model, in the correct color, refurbished by Maskcoaters - a Michigan mask recoater that the Lions used to refurbish masks. The mask is secured with the original clips and hardware.
Great original helmet, complete, that does not get much better!
