Game Worn / Practice worn Notre Dame Rawlings AIMS helmet.  The AIMS adult helmet came out in the early 1980s and was used in both college football and in the NFL.  Rawlings had the market covered with XL sized helmets as few manufacturers of helmets offered an XL size.  This helmet was manufactured in 1986 and saw the field in South Bend - first as a gamer and later as a practice helmets.  The helmet was reconditioned for the 1987, 1988, and 1989 seasons as indicated by the reconditioning stickers in the crown of the helmet.  The mask is a 1980s style Schutt OPO, original to the helmet.  By 1988, the Irish had transitioned to all reverse strap mounted facemasks for their game helmets, but practice photos from that season show many helmets with the older straight strap mounted masks.   The helmet has a large early signature of Irish legend and NFL Hall of Famer, Joe Montana.  The helmet was obviously signed before Cool Joe’s fame and his famous $250 double squiggle autograph that he has signed for the last 25 year.  The helmet shows moderate wear with most exterior scrapes and scuffs not really visible in the photos above.   A true Irish gamer of a rare model, in a very rare size, signed by a legend.
