Game Worn Colts helmet.  The Riddell WD1 helmet has very heavy wear in the form of deep gouges to the front of the helmet from the multiple seasons that it was used.  The helmet was manufactured in 1986, and was used through the 1990season.  The helmet has the name Thompson written on the inside of the helmet along with a pair of “35” written player identifiers.  The Thompson name has been scribbled out with marker.  Donnell Thompson was a starting defensive end for the Colts for a number of seasons which explains the deep gouges.  It is clear the helmet was originally used by Thompson and then issued to a camp player that wore #35 but did not make the team.  No active player wore #35 for the Colts during the helmet’s life.  

The XL (7 5/8) helmet is all original and has not been altered or modified.  The helmet logo decals and center stripe are proper and original to the helmet.  They are positioned properly and adhered to the exterior of the helmet well, with no lifting.  The side logos exhibit the smaller horseshoe nail holes as well as the more narrow top opening of the shoe as used by the Colts during this era.  The mask is an early 1985 OPO model, thin wire, secured to the helmet with it’s original clips and hardware.  Athletic tape is wrapped around the bars of the mask at the secure points in order for the clips to fit tighter to the helmet, identical as compared to the two photos below.   Like nearly all Colts helmets that were released from this period, there are no player identifiers on the rear of the helmet.   

A nice helmet, getting tougher to find, in a rare very desirable model, with a rare original mask and hardware, ready to display and become the centerpiece for your collection.
