Game Worn New Orleans helmet worn by #34 Bobby Johnson. The helmet has an original manufacturing date of 1983 and was worn by Johnson for the two seasons that he played for the Saints before his departure to the Cardinals.
The helmet is original and complete with the exception of the chinstrap. The helmet has its original Schutt NOP model facemask from 1983, secured to the helmet with the reproduction clips as the original clips from that period become brittle and break. The conventional clips secure the top mounts and sides as worn by the Saints during this period. The helmet retains its original hardware. The helmet exibits light to moderate wear with some scrapes and scuffs to the exterior.
The logos and striping is original, properly positioned, and adhered well to the helmet with no lifting. The helmet has a team applied warning label on the rear as well as the the individual player identifier numbers 3 and 4 positioned at the bottom of the black side stripes, as well as a white on gold dymo tape player identifier on the inside of the helmet as shown in the photo. The rear identifiers were individual numbers in a rounded font and easily recognized compared to the screen printed on clear version that they team later adopted, that were tough to read from any distance. The front of the helmet has a SAINTS bumper decal covering the Riddell name on the front bumper pad. Finally, interesting to note that the Saints used the early optional rear neck pad on their WD1 helmets from this period and this helmet does have that pad - original to the helmet and seen on photos of Saints players from this period. Great game used helmet, complete and original, of a team in which their game used helmets are rare and do not come around often.
