Here is a helmet with a great story. We purchased this helmet from a private party that stated that his uncle worked for riddell in the early 1970s. This helmet was mocked up by Riddell to show the Chicago Bears what their new logo would look like. As you may know, the Bears transitioned from a solid white C on the sides of their helmets to the orange C with the white outline. A logo they still use today. The owner of the helmet stated that Riddell took orange vinyl, laid onto the existing white C's on this helmet, and proceeded to cut the orange vinyl with a razor/exacto knife. When we received the helmet, sure enough, when the orange portion was carefully peeled back, there are cut marks in the original white C's of the helmet.
As many helmet collectors know, Riddell manufactured many of the NFL decals that were applied to the helmets. In the 1960s and very early 1970s, Riddell produced many of the logos using multiple layers of colored vinyl. Packers, Saints, Oilers, Texans, Chargers, and others were all produced using multiple layers of vinyl. In the early 1970s, Riddell would supply logos that were printed - as the Bears on-field logos were and still are today.
The helmet itself is a Riddell Micro Fit model that was manufactured in 1970. It is all original as sourced to us. The original owner did not know if the helmet was a game used helmet back at Riddell for reconditioning or what, but it is clear that it is an original Bears helmet used from 1970 when it left the Riddell factory, through the 1972 season when it was used by Riddell as the 1973 prototype concept helmet. No player identifiers remain on the inside of the helmet. A very rare, one of a kind helmet, which should be in the Bears museum or in a bar/restaurant in Chicago. Ready to display and priced to sell.
