Game Used Michigan State MacGregor 100MH Clear Shell Helmet. This style/model of helmet was used by the Spartans and very popular with the team from the mid 1960's through at least the 1974 season. They used both this style as well as the padded top version made popular by Bubba Smith, Gene Upshaw, and Art Shell. Today, the MacGregor Spartan helmets are not only very rare but highly coveted by Spartan fans and helmet collectors.
MSU used these helmets and purchased them from MacGregor with both the logos on the inside of the shell as well as blank in which they would apply the logo decals on the outside of the shell - as shown in the photo below. We have game used examples of both from different eras.
The helmet is complete along with the original rare MacGregor chinstrap. The datecode of 1970 is stamped on the original leather suspension padding on the inside of the helmet. The helmet has an original rare mid to late 60s NOP model facemask, showing light to moderate wear with small spots of bare metal in the upper corners of the mask. It is secured to the helmet with reproduction clips but retains it original hardware including the slotted brass screws as shown in the photo below. The original clips were broken - as they all are from this era after becoming brittle.
The center stripe is painted on the helmet. The logos are period correct, properly positioned, and adhered to the helmet very well with slight lifting is small spots near the external suspension rivets. The logos are in excellent condition with no wear or adhesive residue leading us to believe that they are indeed replacement decals. We have priced the helmet accordingly. The helmet shows moderate game use. An excellent, very rare model of a Spartan helmet - very seldom found, that you may never see another one like it.
