Game Worn Kansas State Riddell RT model helmet from 1951 through the 1956 season. The Riddell RT helmet was one of the first "plastic" helmets following the leather helmets used in college and professional football. The RT model (Riddell Tenite) was a soft plastic that would warp easily. The helmets were used in the 1940s through 1950s in a period that included facemasks as well as helmets worn with no masks. Today, the RT helmets found without facemasks are often badly warped. Those with a mask installed, like this helmet, retain their shape very well over the 70 plus years they have been around. The RT helmet was manufactured with two halves and a center one inch (1") solid plastic ridge seam. The seams were a solid team color, replaced by paint and vinyl stripes in the late 50s through today.
This RT helmet is all original and has not been altered or modified in any way. The helmet is complete with original Riddell suspension, original snap in well worn leather jawpads, and the original 1950s plastic one bar mask. The original chinstrap is still present with the helmet but the center leather cup has became brittle and is torn away from the outer leather framework of the strap. The helmet remains in original nice condition, exhibiting moderate wear on the exterior and interior of the helmet. A rare model of helmet with very few that have survived over the years, and many of the survivors having significant warping. A nice, very rare early KSU game used helmet.
