There comes a time in life, or in NFL careers, when it is time to start over. For Daunte Culpepper, that time is now. Culpepper once considered a lock for the Hall of Fame and argueably the best quarterback in the NFL,
recently signed with the Miami Dolphins after spending eight rollercoaster years playing for the Vikings. This is Culpepper's 2001 helmet that he wore with the Vikings. All components of this helmet are original, worn by Culpepper, and consistent with Vikings game helmets.
Riddell VSR4 model helmet, molded Viking Purple, in a size large. This was the last year that the Vikings wore the molded helmet, switching to the painted metallic purple in 2002.
The helmet comes complete with Schutt JOP thin-wire mask, as preferred by Culpepper. This was the last year that Culpepper wore the carbon steel mask, switching to the lighter Titanium model which he continues to wear today.
The mask is attached to the helmet with Schutt thin-wire clips on top, black Shockblocker clips on the sides, with black phillips screws being used. The chinstrap is a hard cup, high mount, Riddell with Riddell screened in red, on the lower straps.
The chinstrap is attached to the top of the helmet with slotted black screws, through the horn as done by the Vikings Equipment Staff, and on the bottom with
metal clips. A name and number identifier is found on the inside of the helmet as well as velcro radio communication patches as placed by the equipment staff. A recertification sticker is also on the
inside of the helmet.
The Vikings Horn decals of the helmet remain intact with no lifting or seperation from the helmet. The rear bumper of the helmet has the current Vikings style decal applied to it. This was the first year
that the Vikings wore this scripted font, switching from the stenciled style worn in the past. Other decals on the rear of the helmet include: Authentic team warning label, American Flag, and NFL Shield. An interesting feature of this helmet is the
purple oval decals to cover the inflation valves of the helmet, so the white valves do not show and clash with the purple of the helmet. A Riddell purple decal is placed on the front nose bumper of the helmet.
The helmet shows light wear on both the inside and outside of the helmet. Minor scratches, and virtually no facemask and decal wear, shows what great protection the offensive line gave the quarterback.
This helmet displays very well. If Culpepper can get back to playing to his potential, this helmet is a very good investment. Originally sourced through Upper Deck Authenticated as part of their 2002
