Game Worn Notre Dame MacGregor H612 leather “3-rivet” model helmet.  This model helmet, commonly referred to as the “Iron Cross” helmet, was used by Notre Dame from the early to late 1950s.  In roughly 1956, the school began to outfit each helmet with a one bar facemask, in addition to the helmets worn by linemen which had previously had Schutt cage facemasks installed.  We refer to this model as the “3-rivet” model for the three rivets running along the top seam, used to secure the side leather pieces of the helmet to the helmet top in the manufacturing process.  You can see the three rivets in the top row of the photo above.   There are many MacGregor H612s in the market with the black “Iron Cross” straps, however very few of the 3-rivet variety which Notre Dame used.

This helmet, in a size 7 - 7 1/8, is in original condition and shows very nice game wear.  The gold dye of the leather has worn appropriately in areas of the helmet to reveal the brown leather under the dye.  The helmet is solid, with no loose stitching.  The helmet is complete and includes the original MacGregor chinstrap.  The helmet has no player identifiers inside the helmet - which was commonly the case with ND helmets from this era.

A very rare helmet, tough to find in the 3-rivet variety, original and complete, ready to display and become the centerpiece of your collection.
